Torchwood favourite and children's author John Barrowman has entertained his fans during an appearance in Bath. The star dropped into the Waterstones store in Milsom Street with his sister, Carole E Barrowman, to talk about their latest writing venture, a sci-fi/fantasy novel called Bone Quill. More than 100 people turned out for the event, with the queues forming around three hours before it began. The brother and sister duo's first collaboration came with John's autobiographies Anything Goes and I Am What I Am. They decided to move on to children's books after what he describes as a "whim borne out of a sugar high on the M4 between London and Cardiff". John said: "We started talking about superpowers and what we would do if we had them. "We decided that we would like to go back to being children and by the end of that first car journey we had the plot for the first three books." The pair spend time together at John's home where they thrash out the outline, ideas and story and then journalist and professor of English Carole goes away to do the writing. The books are based on twins Matt and Em Calder who can bring drawings to life and in Bone Quill they travel back to the Middle Ages to hunt out the mysterious bone quill and protect it from those wanting to abuse its power. Clare Lewis, events manager at Waterstones, said John and has sister had proved popular. She said: "There was a lot of interest in the build-up, we had a lot of excited people ringing us in the days running up to it, so we knew there was a lot of excitement. "He was a real gentleman and had a lot of stories and anecdotes to share with people. He was very happy to spend time chatting with fans and it was just a lovely atmosphere." Two fans presented John with a customised hoodie they had made for him especially for the launch.
