The refurbishment of Widcombe footbridge by Bath & North East Somerset Council will start on April 15th 2013 for nine weeks. The bridge will be closed to the public for the duration of the work.

One lane of traffic will be closed on the A36 between 9.30am and 3pm during the period when scaffolding is being put up and dismantled. There will be occasional lane closures to allow deliveries to the site.

The closure of the bridge is needed because of the complicated nature of the work and the age of the structure. It involves:

  • Complete removal of the existing paintwork mechanically;
  • Containing the material which is removed because the paint is lead based and hazardous;
  • Using a temporary sheeting scaffold to allow both safe access to the structure and containing hazardous material effectively;
  • Making minor repairs to the steelwork;
  • Applying protective paint.

The Council thanks people for their patience whilst the work takes place and for following the pedestrian diversion to Churchill Bridge that is required. Near neighbours to the bridge are being written to. For more information, people can contact us at Council Connect on councilconnect@bathnes.gov.uk or 01225 39 40 41.
