Many drivers have long believed that they waste more fuel by turning their car engine off and on again than by leaving it idling.
In fact, research shows that leaving it running for as little as ten seconds can waste more fuel than restarting it, and that a car uses as much fuel while stationary for two minutes as would be used to travel a mile.
This is the same for the amount of pollution, with an idling car releasing about the same amount of fumes as a moving vehicle.
