A group of runners from Bath took part in a 10km race in the heat of Ethiopia to raise money for charity.

Team Bath AC member Guy Woods took part in the event, which saw him running at altitude alongside some of the best athletes in the world.

Along with Alex Chapman, Helen Loxton, Sara Loxton, Miranda Blofeld and Liam Hill, he raised £10,000 for Ethiopiaid, which was set up in 1989 as a fundraising charity that enables Ethiopians to help themselves

Guy completed the race in 43 minutes, and said he had never experienced anything like it before.

He said: "There were officially 37,000 people in the race not even counting those joining in from the sidelines along the way and it was an incredible experience.

"I have been in big races before like the London Marathon but this was a different dimension altogether.

"It was just a huge day out for Ethiopia and the whole course was lined by people partying, singing and dancing with bands playing reggae and Ethiopian music.

"It felt like the whole city had stopped for this race and it was just a phenomenal atmosphere and a truly memorable experience."

The Great Ethiopian Run was started in 2001 by Ethiopian runner Haile Gebreselassie and British legend-turned- broadcaster Brendan Foster.

Money raised from the event goes towards helping projects and organisations in Ethiopia, including a hospital, which cures women of fistula – a birth injury caused by obstructed labour.

Bath team leader Alex said: "I had heard that it was the loudest race in the world but nothing could have prepared me for the atmosphere.

"It was fantastic with bands playing along the route and everyone singing and chanting.

"It was more like a street carnival than a race and the energy and enthusiasm carried you along.

"Too often we see negative images of Ethiopia as a country of famine and poverty so it was wonderful to see so many young people with so much potential enjoying themselves and raising money for charity."

A programme about the race will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Sunday at 7.10am.
