Adults with learning and physical difficulties in Bath are being given the chance to learn life skills by working in a pop-up charity shop.

The shop on Southgate Street is being run by Bath Gateway Out and About to raise funds for the charity.

Members are given the chance to work in the shop to improve their confidence and social skills.

Paul Clelland, 21, has spent two days working in the shop.

He said: "I like helping here, and doing things like organising the books. It is nice to meet new people who come in.

"I like belonging to Gateway. I can socialise with my friends and have fun."

Club leader Becky Morgan said the shop provided a vital opportunity for members to feel involved in the community and gain work experience.

She said: "The theme is 'rise and shine', which is what our members do – they rise for work here and they shine.

"If the members are not working here then they are just sat at home doing nothing. Many members have very little work opportunities so myself and dedicated volunteers are very keen for them to try a wide range of different tasks within the retail business.

"It allows them to expand their life skills while building confidence and raising their self-esteem, which will increase their independence."

The shop will be open until this Sunday and sells a range of items including books, clothes, and toys.

Bath Gateway Out and About provides social and leisure activities for adults aged 18 and over with a range of needs.

The club is looking for sponsorship to allow it to run a shop permanently.
