Nominations for amateur "Oscars"

A number of amateur dramatic groups and actors in Bath have been nominated for a set of prestigious theatre awards. The annual Rose Bowl awards aim to encourage excellence in the amateur theatre within the South West. Described as the 'Oscars of the South West,' the awards are open to any amateur dramatic or operatic club in Bristol, Bath, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. Award winners are nominated by a panel of adjudicators chosen for their extensive qualifications and experience in the amateur and professional theatre, either through performing or teaching. This year saw 91 entries received, representing 58 amateur theatre companies. Clubs and actors in Bath and north east Somerset have done well, with a long list of nominations. In the category of Best Variety/Revue/Pantomime nominations include the Bathford Players for Robin Hood and Babes In The Woods, Encore Northenders Theatre Company, based in Batheaston, for Goldilocks, and Keynsham Light Opera Group for Musical Memories. The category for Best Opera/Operetta saw a nomination for the Bath Operatic and Dramatic Society for The Mikado. The show was also nominated for the David Whitehead Award for Best Actor, for Oli Hounsell who played Nanki-Poo. In the category for the Walter Hawkins Award for Creativity and Design, the Argyle Players were nominated for A Small Family Business. Maisie Carter, from Zenith Youth Theatre Company was nominated for the Barbara Macrae Youth Theatre Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Kim in Miss Saigon. The Jean Fennell Award for Best Youth Production sees another nomination for Zenith, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, for its productions of Miss Saigon and Animal Farm. Timsbury Theatre Group was nominated for the John Coe Award for Best Dramatic Production, for Cash on Delivery The Bristol Evening Post Award for Best Musical Production sees a nomination for Exit Stage Left, for its production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Results will be announced at the awards night at the Winter Gardens in Weston-super-Mare on Sunday October 13. Winners will be presented with an engraved crystal Rose Bowl.
