The process of turning Bath's residential streets into 20mph zones is set to be rolled out to the London Road area.
Bath and North East Somerset Council has begun a £500,000 project to reduce speeds on smallers roads in the district, and has already implemented zones in Southdown in Bath.
Its next target area is the Walcot and Lansdown wards, and part of the Lambridge ward at Larkhall.
A consultation exercise will run until January 14 and leaflets will be distributed to every household in the proposed restriction area.
Lansdown Road and London Road will continue to be 30mph streets, and much of Camden is already covered by an existing 20mph limit.
Council transport cabinet member Councillor Roger Symonds (Lib Dem, Combe Down) said: "Reduced speed limits with safer streets is a key road priority for the council so that communities are better places to walk, cycle and spend time in. People now have the opportunity to have their say in Walcot, Lansdown, and part of Lambridge about the idea of a 20mph limit on many of their streets.
"The statistics are on our side. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents estimates that a pedestrian has a 90 per cent chance of surviving being hit by a car at 20mph, falling to a 50 per cent chance at 30mph and to ten per cent at 40mph."
There will no traffic calming and the council says it will avoid "over intrusive signage".
It and the police expect the limits to be self-enforcing.
There is further information about the timetable and proposed order for introducing the limits at www.bathnes.gov.uk/20mphspeedlimit or people can email transportation@bathnes.gov.uk or call 01225 39 40 41.
The informal consultation takes place prior to the issuing of a formal traffic regulation order, when people will again have the chance to have their say.
