Bath City director of football Adie Britton was left fuming at both the first red card of Joe Burnell's career and what he described as "intimidation" by visitors Boreham Wood in the wake of Saturday's 2-2 draw. Burnell was issued with two yellow cards by referee Richard Hulme, the first as a result of a high tackle and the second for kicking the ball away. "Sending Joe off I thought was outrageous," said Britton. "He more or less made contact with the ball as the whistle has gone and I think the referee has got that badly wrong. He definitely was not kicking the ball away. No question of it. "It followed on from the first card, where the lad came on the blindside so he couldn't even see him. "I think that is two very unfortunate yellow cards. In a professional career of 13 or 14 years it is the first time Joe has been sent off." It was a match full of incident, many clearly unseen by referee Hulme, who at one point in the second half was forced to call both captains together in an attempt to calm the players down. In addition to Burnell's dismissal, City collected three yellow cards – one each for Aaron Brown, Mark Preece and Josh Low – while Boreham Wood goalscorer Mario Notto was the sole visiting player cautioned. However, Britton clearly saw his side as more sinned against than sinners. "It was a hugely physical game and we had a number of knocks," he said. "The way they play is intimidating and physical. "We are a footballing side. We get the ball down and try and play. "We've also conducted ourselves pretty well and won the fair play league twice. "It's not very often all of us on the bench are annoyed in the extreme but last week and this week we have been by the physicality and nature of the games. "When you get players going round the field confronting people off the ball and making contact off the ball, which happened so many times in the game, you really have to stamp it out. "However, it wasn't and it happened last week and its happened again this week." Britton was also disappointed that, having led for almost the entirety of the second half, City were left with only a point to show for their efforts. "They didn't really look like scoring in the second half," he said. "But we had one lapse of concentration. "The ball came in from the free-kick, we had two or three opportunities to clear it but didn't do so. "So it was a scrappy and an unfortunate goal but one we should have done better with."LISTEN TO ANDREW KERSLAKE'S POST-MATCH INTERVIEW WITH ADIE BRITTON HERE
