Former Times editor Lord Rees-Mogg has died aged 84.
The journalist William Rees-Mogg, whose son Jacob is MP for North East Somerset, had been taken ill just before Christmas.
Lord Rees-Mogg, who had a house in Mells in Somerset, edited the Times for 14 years, and was a former chairman of the Arts Council and vice-chairman of the BBC.
He was made a life peer in 1988.
His son told The Times that his father had recently been diagnosed with inoperable cancer.
"It has been a mercifully short illness. He died very peacefully and a member of his family was with him. He was very prepared for it."
Lord Rees-Mogg, who was born in Bristol, once owned Ston Easton Park.
He had two sons and three daughters.
