Councillors have expressed concerns over proposals to build 99 homes on land in Saltford.

Crest Nicholson has submitted plans for the homes on a green belt site at Manor Road, to the south of the village.

Saltford Parish Council is opposed to the plans, and has called a public meeting to let residents have their say.

The parish councillors have been backed by Bath and North East Somerset ward councillors Francine Haeberling (Con, Saltford), and Mathew Blankley (Con, Saltford).

Cllr Haeberling said: "All but a very small number of residents that have spoken to us over the last few weeks have expressed their great concern at these proposals.

"The Conservative group and I treasure the value of our green belt immensely; it is there for a reason and that is to protect towns and villages like Saltford from being swallowed up by the two cities either side of us."

Cllr Blankley added: "This proposal, if accepted, will set a very worrying precedent for subsequent planning applications on the green belt between Bristol and Bath.

"I hope that many residents will attend the parish council's public meeting."

Pegasus Planning Group is acting as the agent on behalf of Crest Nicholson.

In a document submitted as part of the latest planning application, it states that the aim of the scheme is to provide affordable housing in the area.

"The application is for a scheme of up to 99 dwellings.

"The exact numbers are not confirmed at this stage, but the development will provide a mix of two, three, four and five-bed dwellings, incorporating a mix of house types.

"Provision for affordable housing will be included as part of the scheme in accordance with adopted policy."

A decision is expected to be made by Bath and North East Somerset Council in March.

The application has been submitted as the council works out its next move over its core strategy blueprint document.

An independent inspector has thrown the Liberal Democrat-run authority's policy of protecting green belt land into jeopardy, arguing that the current level of planned housing is not enough.

Both Tories and Liberal Democrats agree that green belt land should be protected, but have fallen out over this should best be done.

The council has now gone back to the drawing board and it is expected that greenfield sites will be coming under greater threat when a revised version of the strategy is produced.

The public meeting will take place on Saturday January 5 at 5pm in the main hall at Saltford Hall, Wedmore Road.

Details of the planning application can be found on the B&NES planning website www.bathnes.gov.uk, application reference 12/05315/OUT. Comments can be made via the site.
