Day off for most pupils but not all

Thousands of children across Bath and north east Somerset enjoyed a day off from lessons last Friday because of the snow.

But at least two schools battled to keep their doors open with teachers making major efforts to get in on time.

And another school found its recent purchase of a snow plough came in handy.

Both St Andrew's Primary School, in Northampton Street, and Monkton Combe School welcomed youngsters in as usual.

And three of the St Andrew's teachers had made a special effort, with trainee James Elliott catching a train from Taunton, Jilly Bryant leaving Bathampton at 6.30am to trek across the city, and Graeme Barry walking for three hours to complete the seven-mile journey from Peasedown St John.

Once the children were in they were allowed to play in the snow, building snowmen and throwing snowballs, before warming up with a cup of hot chocolate.

Usual lessons were cast aside so they could watch the children's classic The Snowman, before they all learnt to sing its Christmas favourite Walking in the Air.

Head teacher Sue East said her staff had been "wonderful", making the extra effort to get in to school.

Parent Pete Rogers said his six-year-old son Max was "thrilled to bits" at his new-style school day.

He said: "Once he realised he wouldn't be doing normal lessons, he said 'school's the best'."

Staff at St Martin's Garden Primary School made sure its pupils could get to lessons safely by using a snow plough they had bought on eBay.

Site manager Vaughan Kinver came up with the idea and is now getting requests from other schools in the area who want to borrow it.

At Monkton Combe School the majority of day pupils joined staff and boarders for an almost normal day.

Speaking last Friday, head teacher Richard Backhouse said: "Pupils' learning has been able to continue today, and academic momentum is largely unchecked."
