A Bath school is to take over the running of a community sports facility.
The Bath Community Academy is now looking for the best way to secure the future of the Culverhay Sports Centre, in the school grounds at Rush Hill.
The new academy inherited the sports centre when it replaced Culverhay School last September. At the moment the centre is run by leisure operator Aquaterra through a contract with Bath and North East Somerset Council, but this comes to an end on July 1.
Principal Adam Williams said the school has been told by B&NES it needed to sort out a new management regime.
The sports centre is used by the school during the week but by the community during evenings and at weekends.
Mr Williams said: "B&NES is discontinuing that relationship with Aquaterra. The sports centre will now become the property of the school.
"There will be natural concern with the community but we are doing all we can to try to ensure the provision can be maintained and even improved. This was not expected and we have some work to do.
"B&NES reported that it makes a loss but if you are ever there on an evening or at weekends it is packed. This is not the norm for a school to take on."
The school is part of the Cabot Learning Federation.
A spokesman for B&NES said the centre was not owned by the council.
He said: "It is Bath Community Academy's responsibility to have found a new management provider by this time. The council has offered support to them to procure a new contract."
Chief executive of Aquaterra, Antony Kildare, confirmed its contract for the sports centre was due to come to an end on July 1.
