Wiltshire Police has appointed a new deputy chief constable.

Mike Veale, who has been temporarily carrying out the job for almost 12 months, will now take on the role permanently.

The former Avon and Somerset officer joined Wiltshire as a detective superintendent in 2005, before being promoted through the ranks.

Mr Veale said: "I am really proud and privileged to have been selected.

"I do not underestimate the significant responsibility this exciting and challenging role brings."

He also paid tribute to the force's officers and staff who he said remained dedicated to serving the community despite the daily challenges they faced.

Chief constable Pat Geenty welcomed the appointment.

He said: "The interview panel were very impressed by his engaging and motivational leadership style and his awareness of the substantial challenges facing the wider police service over the coming months and years."
